ACM (or ACP)
Aluminium Composite Material
What is ACM
& Why use ACM Panels?
ACM (Aluminium Composite Material) panels typically consist of two thin aluminium skins bonded to a lightweight polyethylene core (or fire‑retardant grade). The result is a lightweight, rigid, stable surface that’s easier to handle than solid metal and is perfect for fulfilling customers requirements for our ACM (ACP) printing services.
Key benefits to use our ACM (ACP) printing services:
- Flat, stable surface ideal for consistent print quality
- Durable in outdoor environments (resists corrosion, UV, moisture)
- Easy to machine, cut, and finish
- Lighter than solid metal, easier to install
- Available with print‑optimised coatings for better ink adhesion
Because of those advantages, many sign shops, print houses, and display fabricators prefer ACM sheets for printing over foam boards, corrugated plastic, or even rigid acrylic in many applications.
Choosing the Right ACM for Print
Not all composite panels are equal, some things to consider are:
- Print‑friendly surfaces (e.g. digital white vs primer)
- Thicker aluminium skins (0.2–0.3 mm) give better edges, flatness tolerance, print quality and forming options.
- Fire‑rated cores (FR) required by building regulations
- Fixed panel sizes (e.g. 2440×1220 mm, 3050×1500 mm) or cut-to-size options
Premium panels do tend to cost more, but they reduce problems that can occur with production and generally will last longer than the cheaper alternatives.
Artwork Tips
To get the best results when printing on ACM:
- All artwork should be supplied as CMYK
- 300 dpi resolution (or appropriate for viewing distance)
- Include 3–5 mm bleed beyond any trim
- Supply a cut-line layer for routing
- Leave safe margins from edges
- If printing both sides, mirror design and allow for registration
Printing Methods
- UV Flatbed (Direct‑to‑Board): The go-to method. UV ink printed straight onto the ACM surface and cured instantly. Offers high quality, sharpness, and good adhesion.
- Screen Printing: Useful for strong spot colours, though less suited to photographic detail.
- Vinyl Overlays: Print on vinyl first, then mount to ACM — a hybrid approach if your printer can’t do direct-to-panel.
Finishing & Assembly
After printing, proper finishing ensures longevity and aesthetics:
- Lamination / Clear Coats: For scratch protection, anti‑graffiti, or UV resistance
- Routing / Cutting: Multi-pass methods help avoid delamination or edge chipping
- Bending / Folding: V-grooving or scoring panels to be folded
- Edge Sealing: To block moisture or debris from entering cores
- Mounting: Screws, rivets, adhesives — allow for thermal movement with pre-drilled holes
Durability & Maintenance
- With quality ink and protective laminate, printed ACM panels can last for years outdoors
- Clean gently with mild soap and soft cloths — avoid harsh chemicals
- Inspect edges, fixings, and lamination regularly
- In very large panels, joints can be used to reduce the possibility of warping
Use Cases & Examples
- Outdoor signage (shop fronts, wayfinding)
- Exhibition panels & displays
- Architectural graphics integrated into buildings
- Retail interiors, feature walls, point-of-sale signage
- Art installations & gallery panels
Because ACM offers a premium look and durability, it’s especially compelling when you want more than a “temporary sign” aesthetic.
